Keep an eye on this one!

It's always great to get these pictures from customers and friends. This is a very happy young man with his Baja Cattle heifer. When the Collins family came to look at cattle this fall, Kesler was very selective. After they looked through our offering, he told me what his top three were and why. His mom and dad agreed 100%. Thankfully he got his number one pick and they are getting along great. Good luck with your new heifer Kesler!

Baja Catalina 3A ET
February 5, 2013
Purple Tonic 10M x Reload/145E
This one has been the favorite of many visitors this summer. Her mother is a Reload out of the famous 145E cow that has produced numerous national champions, elite donors, and A.I. sires. Catalina is no exception. She is sappy bellied, square hipped, and long necked. Not to mention she can flat out move. No guess work here. This one is flat good and predictably profitable. Retaining one future flush at seller’s expense.

We love this one! She has the size and power it takes to win. She has that long extended choke neck with a flat shoulder. She’s got the swoop to the belly and you can’t make one any sounder or more flexible at the ground. This one is the real deal, if you don’t believe me, drive here and see for yourself. Retaining one future flush at seller’s expense

A dark red Cyrus heifer with an abundance of belly and dimension that is truly going to be a power cow. This heifer hit the ground big and never stopped. Backed by a powerfully constructed and beautifully uddered mother, this one has what it takes to be in the chase. When she hairs up, you’ll see what I mean. Easy doing and gentle enough for a first timer. Bid with confidence.

Purple Milsap 45S x Reload
This was a highly anticipated mating on our farm and it didn’t disappoint. Lolo’s mother was a many-time champion for the Core family in 2010 (click on thumbnail to see pic). This one has an elite look with plenty of dimension. She may be green now, but so is the money you’ll make off her as a donor. She has every piece it takes to make a great one. Just give her time. Retaining one future flush at seller’s expense

This one has the style you look for in a show heifer with the fundamentals you want in your cow herd. She is fluid on the move, flat shouldered, long spined, and extended through her front third, all with a stout hip and an added shot of power. We started flushing her mother this year and this one’s sure to find the donor pen as well. Retaining one future flush at seller’s expense.

Here is a very well designed younger prospect sired by the world famous About Time. Her donor, L112, was no slouch either as she found the backdrop several times. She’s sweet fronted, cool made, and sound. This one will get better every day you own her. Don’t be shy

Truly a junior national or state fair contender! Currency is a bull that can do the most with the least and just look at what he does when you put him on a cow with plenty. This steer is a killer prospect and has every piece to be a lethal fat. I wouldn’t want to show against him. Don’t miss your chance to own him

Baja Steer 11A
March 7, 2013
THM Durango 4037 x Hereford
It’s not easy to get this much belly on a steer but this one could do it eating sagebrush. He’s soft made with added power and plenty of look. This is an easy doing steer that’s fit for a first timer that wants to be a contender. Special note: This steer is out of a non-registered purebred cow. He does come with a Hereford steer certificate but with the new JNHE rules, he won’t be eligible for Junior Nationals.

909 is a Reload daughter that was extremely successful for
the Core family in 2010.  I can't even begin to list everything that
heifer won.  At the Embryos on Snow sale in Denver, we purchased the right
to flush that female and the resulting E.T. calves are making us look very smart!
Come check her out as well as several other Hereford heifers and steers

Customer Success

Nothing beats a retired show heifer that turns into a front pasture cow, other than a retired show heifer that turns into a money making donor.  That's exactly what happened for one of our customers, Silver Bullet Herefords.  They purchased a Reload daughter from us a few years ago that has paid for herself tenfold.  One of her E.T. daughters recently sold for $6000, and she's just getting started!
Be sure to check out our sale offering for your next show heifer and donor prospect.

It's that time of year

Well, its August 1st which means many things.  One is that the Iowa State Fair starts in one week, which is quite possibly the highest anticipated event of the year (at least in our family).  This year we will be experiencing the fair in a whole new way.  The biggest difference to previous years is that we are expecting our first child this November.  So I'm sure my pregnant wife will be in heaven with the smorgasbord of food vendors available to satisfy her cravings.  We'll also be taking the longest string of Herefords we've ever shown.  We're doing this for two reasons.  First, is that we have the best set of cattle that we've ever raised.  No joke or gimmick, this is a set that is impressive from top to bottom.  And the second reason is that we'll be having our inaugural sale this fall hosted by Breeder's World, and the State Fair is a great place to showcase what we'll have to offer.

The first of August also brings out all the advertisements for upcoming sales.  Picturing sale cattle is not an easy task and I don't envy the people that do it for a living, other than all the places and cattle they see along the way.  We fought the battle about 6 weeks ago and are quite proud of how our ad turned out.  You can find it on page 247 in the August issue of the Show Circuit.  We will be taking pictures again this weekend for the September/October issues and we'll be posting them on here under the For Sale tab.  Feel free to give us a call with any questions.

New Sale Format

We feel as though we have a banner calf crop again this year, and we're taking the next step in our operation!  We will be offering our top show heifer and steer prospects this fall in an online sale hosted by Breeders' World.  The sale date will be October 17th, 2013.  We had been kicking around this option for a little while now, and decided it was time.  Our entire calf crop is once again A.I. sired or the result of Embryo Transfer, bringing you some of the most sought after genetics in the Hereford breed.  Stay tuned for more info and sneak peeks of our offering.  And as always, feel free to Contact Us with any questions.

Big News!

I'm very happy to announce that my wife and I are expecting our first child! This is the proudest moment of my existence! Baby Monroe will have some choices to make. My wife grew up showing pigs and cheering on the Iowa State Cyclones and I grew up showing cattle and rooting for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Decisions, decisions.

Calving Update!

Calf watch 2013 is done at Baja Cattle.  We had great luck this year, especially with the winter weather not wanting to end.  Once again, our entire calf crop is A.I. sired and E.T. calves.  We had nearly an 80% conception rate on our embryos, which we couldn't be happier about.  My wife gives me a bad time about all the analyzing I do when it comes to making breeding decisions, but when the calves hit the ground, she forgets all about it.  This years crop looks extra special with some definite highlights.  Stay tuned for more info and updates!

Iowa Beef Expo Recap

We had a great week at the 2013 Iowa Beef Expo!  For us it started off with the Iowa Select Hereford Sale.  Stalls were set up Tuesday evening and cattle were on display Wednesday and Thursday.  The sale cattle were then on parade in the pavillion Thursday morning for inspection by potential bidders.  When the sale was over, both our consignments sold very well and are headed to the state of Ohio.

Lot 40
Baja Speakeasy 17Z
Sold to Weickert Herefords
Sandusky, OH
We are very proud that Speakeasy will be used to service purebred Hereford cows, we truly feel this bull will sire some outstanding cattle!  Thank you for your confidence in our breeding program

Lot 63
Baja Ila 0412Z
Sold to Chris Pugh
Shelby, OH
We were ecstatic when we found out Ila will be going to a good home and will be shown by a junior!  We can't wait to see her again this summer at Junior Nationals in Kansas City

We also had a few cattle showing in the Junior show during the weekend.  With around 1400 head showing in the junior show, placing at the top of your class is a victory in itself, and we were fortunate enough to do so.  And when they get a look for breed or division champion makes it even better.
